Bishop Daniel E. Thomas on the impact of Hurricane Harvey

As we witness the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent flooding, the people in Texas and beyond need our support in the days, weeks and months to come.

This is a time when Catholics, and all people of faith, need to come together in prayer and action for those whose lives, families and homes are being effected.

As our Holy Father, Pope Francis eloquently says, “Wherever someone is reaching out, asking for a helping hand in order to get up, this is where our presence – and the presence of the Church which sustains and offers hope – must be.”

I encourage all people to join the larger community to help those whose essential needs are compromised.  By working through reputable charitable organizations, we can fulfill the mission of all human persons to help one another in times of need.

Next weekend, September 9 – 10, there will be a special collection for Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo, which will send 100 percent of the proceeds to our sister Catholic Charities on the ground. Checks should be made out to the parish and the parish will send a single check to Catholic Charities.
