Summer Happenings Around the Building and Grounds

Friends, since the summer is a little slower with student ministry, we try to address a number of things around our facilities. I wanted to provide this summer update:

Sound System

In May, thanks to funds from the Living Christ Capital Campaign, we installed updated equipment for our sound system. First, we separated the church and meeting room systems (which were connected) and installed a new system and speakers in the meeting rooms. Second, we updated much of the technology for the church sound system. This new system gives us a lot of new capabilities and I’ve heard a lot of positive comments about the sound quality.

Security System

Again, thanks to Living Christ funds, we started installation of a campus security system this past week, which includes an enhanced alarm system and high-quality cameras. Unfortunately, we have had some safety and security issues throughout the years, and this will allow us to monitor the property better. Next summer, the hope is to install enhanced security for the apartment building.

Roofing Repairs

The sloped section of roofing on the north transept of the church has been leaking for many years. You may have noticed the leaks and the damage to the interior wooden tiles in the church. We have recently received three bids on fixing the source of the leak on the exterior. I am working with parishioner Tim Walsh, who worked for many years in the roofing industry, to decide on the best quote. After the source of the leak is fixed, we will address the interior. This will probably mean taking off all the wooden tiles in that section, addressing any underlying moisture issues, and then replacing that section.

Tabernacle Move

In April, I published my thoughts on moving the tabernacle to the Crucifixion Chapel after a few years of consultation with the diocese. I appreciate all who shared their feedback regarding that proposal. I did decide to go ahead with the proposal and as of this past week, the Blessed Sacrament is now housed in the Crucifixion Chapel for personal prayer.

In the coming weeks, the former tabernacle will be disassembled and stored for possible future use. That area will become our Giving Chapel for Food for Others and our various collection drives. More information on that is to follow. (***If you are a Permanent Community member that had the code to use that chapel for private prayer, please contact me and I’ll give you instructions on how to get into the new chapel to pray).
Thanks for all you do for our parish that makes this such a special place!
